Obsidian, the son of Alan Scott, is behind the odd phenomena in Milwaukee where nothing and no one casts a shadow. The Justice Society of America answers the call to be confronted by shadow monsters. Obsidian reveals himself to the JSA except for Alan Scott, who gets trapped in the Shadowlands. Alan Scott is there confronted by Ian Karkull, an old foe of the JSA. He explains how his power of the darkness has allowed him to survive for many years and he has manipulated Obsidian to assist him in his return to Earth. Black Canary escapes the clutches of Obsidian for help and finds the new Doctor Mid-Nite.
